Whether you want to continue to paint with instruction and encouragement or would like to start and complete assignments with an instructor and other artists, this is the place for you! Some ideas of where to begin will be discussed, including painting the interiors around you, discovering their beauty: your kitchen sink, what's outside your back door, or maybe putting together a few random knick-knacks that have a special meaning. Composing a painting from photos is always an option too. We will walk through the challenges together and continue to make art in the beautiful North Shore Art League painting studio. Classes will include demos, a sharing of each other’s work as well as the work of contemporary artists and old masters.

Ink on paper: Few things are more beautiful or mysterious! And of all the ways to put ink on paper, etching is perhaps the most tactile and satisfying. In this class you will explore intaglio techniques such as etching and aquatint using zinc or copper plates, as well as relief processes on linoleum or wood. Discover the joys of printing and learn skills both modern and antique. Make prints look luscious on an assortment of papers. Students of all levels are welcome. Come create, learn, discuss and have some fun. Lab time included!

Drawing: Master studies & Live Model Portrait/figure

Join notable artist and faculty member Michael Van Zeyl for live model portrait drawing. Individual instruction aimed at improving draftsmanship. We will study the masters of the past along with the live model and work on the fundamentals of proportion, construction, and shading techniques. Thinking BIG! Three-week session
How to approach larger paintings – don’t be afraid!

What subject matter or abstraction calls for a large format to make an impactful statement? You will learn - working on one large painting evolving over 3 weeks. In the first week you will sketch and develop an idea in color. Emphasis will be put on designing your painting. For weeks 2 and 3, you will paint and finish your project with instruction, helpful critiques, composition guidance and a whole new perspective on size!
Supplies:

Open to all levels, we will explore painting techniques from classical masterworks and also learn about more contemporary methods, providing fundamentals that will help each student gravitate to their own personal painting style. Figurative/Portrait Drawing Class

In this class you will learn to draw the human form from direct observation, beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are all welcome. Individuality of expression will be emphasized through an understanding of the basic elements of figure drawing: proportion, light and shade, anatomy, perspective, creating volume, planes, exploration of line and design. Beginning with short and working toward longer poses, with time for more developed studies or portraiture. Class will include preparation and demonstration. Students are also welcome to explore all mediums. Model fees included!

Painting with the encaustic medium adds dimension and translucent layering to your work. Students will learn how to paint with this ancient medium (purified beeswax, mixed with resin and pigments). In each class you will be exploring a new tactile sensibility in your paintings! You will also be provided with various materials that combine with encaustic as they are introduced each week in class.
NOTE: Students’ supply list includes an electric griddle, encaustic paints and board.
