MONDAY

Essentials of Painting 

Instructor: Lisa DePinto

Whether you want to continue to paint with some guidance to advance your work or would like to learn to start and complete paintings, this is the place for you!  Some ideas of where to begin will be discussed, while using traditional and experimental approaches to oil paint, or acrylic, students will explore composition, color and process as well as what makes an image memorable? Working from observation, imagination or printed sources or any combination of those are fine Classes will include demos, a sharing of each other’s work as well as the work of contemporary artists and old masters.

Watercolor and Pastels

Discover the limitless possibilities of the wonderful world of watercolors and pastels. Frequent demonstrations will enhance your knowledge of the mediums and advance your level of comfort by studying various materials, composition, techniques and useful tips as they relate to your individual projects.

Brush Up! Painting & Drawing - Tuesdays

Instructor: Diana deMeuse

This is your chance to work in the medium of your choice! Diana will demo both drawing and painting techniques as well as give individual instruction to students of all levels. Emphasis will be on improving your own personal style in a welcoming and creative atmosphere.

LARGE Canvas Painting – New Time!

Instructor: Diana deMeuse 

Have you ever wanted to paint on a BIG canvas? Step into our studio and spend time learning how with experienced artist and teacher Diana deMeuse. Diana will share her insights and secrets to painting on a large canvas through instruction and demos. All subject matter and styles, from landscapes to abstractions are acceptable. Loads of fun and sure to be your favorite time of the week. Examples of large ready-made sizes include: 30x30, 30x40, 36x36, 36x48, 48x48, and 48x72.

Multi-Level Printmaking  

Instructor: Paula Campbell 

Ink on paper: Few things are more beautiful or mysterious! And of all the ways to put ink on paper, etching is perhaps the most tactile and satisfying. In this class you will explore intaglio techniques such as etching and aquatint using zinc or copper plates, as well as relief processes on linoleum or wood. Discover the joys of printing and learn skills both modern and antique. Make prints look luscious on an assortment of papers. Students of all levels are welcome. Come create, learn, discuss and have some fun. Lab time included!

Drawing/painting from life!

Open Studio – Live Model – Long Pose

Monitored by Michael Van Zeyl

Join notable portrait artist and faculty member Michael Van Zeyl for live model drawing and painting sessions. He will set up the pose and work along with the attendees – a perfect chance to draw or paint from life or use the studio for your own work!

The Path to Painting Success (Offering two – 5-week sessions!)

Open to all levels, we will explore painting techniques from classical masterworks and also learn about more contemporary methods, providing fundamentals that will help each student gravitate to their own personal painting style. This class will empower students to make creative decisions that will launch or refine the development of a unique artistic vision. Students will learn about the essentials of the picture-making process including: composition and design, value structure, color harmony and paint application. Find out how to approach the entire process and select appropriate surfaces to achieve a desired result. Etching Wednesday  

Instructor: Paula Campbell 

Transform your ideas, sketches or snapshots into something fresh and new using centuries-old techniques!  Instruction will focus on traditional intaglio methods of etching on copper or zinc plates using various resist grounds and aquatints. Class members may receive individualized guidance in other print methods as well. All levels welcome.  Lab time included.

When: 4/5-6/7 (10 classes)

Time: 2:00-5:00pm

Delve deep into your painting practice! Master composition, gesture, line, color study & expressive color usage. Techniques such as broken brushstroke, optical color mixing, layering and glazing will be studied. Individual instruction and group critique will enhance the students' learning experience.

Soft Pastel Painting

Instructor: Robin Samiljan

Amazing soft pastels: Vibrant colors, easy to blend, easy to layer – all in a small stick! Students will learn how to paint with soft pastels, with a primary focus on landscape painting. We will review composition, color, value, and underpainting techniques. *If you are new to pastel painting, we will be reviewing materials in the first class.

John Fleck is an accomplished painter, comfortable with oil, acrylic, gouache, pastel, and a variety of drawing media. Work on the painting project of your choice. Let him help you with a project you have in mind with suggestions for your process and constructive critiques. Spend class time growing as an artist in a welcoming and creative atmosphere!

Figurative/Portrait Drawing Class

Instructor: Lisa DePinto

In this class you will learn to draw the human form from direct observation, beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are all welcome. Individuality of expression will be emphasized through an understanding of the basic elements of figure drawing: proportion, light and shade, anatomy, perspective, creating volume, planes, exploration of line and design. Beginning with short and working toward longer poses, with time for more developed studies or portraiture. Class will include preparation and demonstration. Students are also welcome to explore all mediums. Model fees included!

Encaustic Painting

Instructor: Robin Samiljan

Painting with the encaustic medium adds dimension and translucent layering to your work. Students will learn how to paint with this ancient medium (purified beeswax, mixed with resin and pigments). In each class you will be exploring a new tactile sensibility in your paintings! You will also be provided with various materials that combine with encaustic as they are introduced each week in class. 

NOTE: Students’ supply list includes an electric griddle, encaustic paints and board.

Essentials of Painting and Building a Good Composition

Instructor: Lisa dePinto

Whether you want to continue to paint with instruction and encouragement or would like to start and complete assignments with an instructor and other artists, this is the place for you! Some ideas of where to begin will be discussed, including painting the interiors around you, discovering their beauty: your kitchen sink, what's outside your back door, or maybe putting together a few random knick-knacks to create a still life that has a special meaning. Composing a painting from photos is always an option too. We will walk through the challenges together and continue to make art as we return to the beautiful North Shore Art League painting studio. Classes will include demos, a sharing of each other’s work as well the work of contemporary artists and old masters.

Go Figure... Putting Life into your Watercolor Paintings (ONLINE)

Instructor: Thomas Trausch

Figures can be added to your paintings to animate them, tell a story, for scale, and to bring an ordinary painting to life. We are naturally drawn to people, their gestures, and the storytelling role they play. Groups of figures, where to place them, and when the features will be added will all be covered. In addition, mixing flesh colors, and a simplified way to approach the figure will be included. This class will be held over Zoom.

Figurative/Portrait Drawing Class

Here’s your chance for an morning figurative class! Figurative work is the most challenging and stimulating form of drawing – a great addition to any art portfolio! In this class you will learn to draw the human form from direct observation, beginning with short and working to longer poses, exploring line, tonal value, proportions, personal expression and perspective...all essential to seeing and translating the figure as a whole. All levels of experience are welcome as well as all mediums. Class will include preparation and demonstration. Students are also welcome who wish to transition from drawing to painting, looking for a starting point to painting or just looking to delve deeper into painting…encouraged to work on individual projects with instruction provided. Model fees included!

ANY DAY----Independent Study  NSAL Faculty
